A splash of colour

Some of you may be aware that I have a reputation for only liking colours that certain people might consider to be 'dull' such as greys, beiges, black and muted colours. Now I disagree with that somewhat and have been leading a battle over the last couple of days to dispel the idea that I don't like bright colours. I do, in fact, like them quite a bit, I just don't tend to wear them much as I don't think that they look particularly good on me - and I like to get all the help that I can to look my best.

On Saturday I wore the following Kukuxumusu T-shirt to meet with some of the Rowanettes:

Lime green tshirt

This is a lime green tshirt (the photo does not do it justice). Jacinta has a picture of me wearing it for the record. So there.

I am also making Kim Hargreaves' tank top 'Flighty' for myself. It's from Rowan 23 although it also appears in Kate Buller's 'The Knitter's Bible'. I have already knit the version with the eyelets in it for my sister but the eyelets are placed placed in such a manner that the reveal more than one might wish them too. Have a look at the picture below and you will see what I mean.

Flighty with eyelets

So that version of Flighty has now found a new lease of life in Knit Happens as a shop sample.

But, not to be defeated, I have started on the other version of the top, which uses 'make 1' instead of 'yarn over' for the increase which means no holes... Here's the Rowan version:

Stripy Flighty

This new version will be in muted summer colours which I really like. I enjoy knitting with the Rowan 4ply cotton and the pattern is quite soothing and easy to follow. I feel as though the end result looks as though one has put in more effort than was actually the case. Which is absolutely fine by me. So here it is on the needles:

Amelia's Stripy Flighty

I have to admit that I am already thinking of frogging it - I think that the colours should possibly go in another order. If only I had thought that through first (I did actually but now that I can see it on the needles, I am not sure that it looks as good as I had hoped). The red, it seems to me, should surround the pink instead of the other way around. I am still debating what to do and so have put it down for a little bit.

Look what I was given the other day:

Lovely Norweigan Yarn

It is so so so soft. The kind of soft that makes you want to stroke it and not put it down. My Rowanette-and-Globetrotter friend Jill went to Norway and brought me this yarn back as a belated birthday present. I love people that help keep my birthday going for a bit longer:)

There are 3 balls of Baby Silk Alpacca which is 80% Baby Alpacca and 20 Silk and it is gorgeous with a beautful sheen and one skein of cotton. Now I see the makings of a lovely scarf in there so please let me know if you have any pattern suggestions as lace scarf patterns are rare in my pattern collection. Apparently the lady in the store where Jill bought the yarn said that it would need to be knitted with the cotton but I am open to either option.

Just had to stop by and say hello! You've reminded me that I have the front of Flighty (started in the Spring) languishing waiting for the back to join it! I used cream and two shades of green and followed the non-eyelet version's stripes. I agree that the finished appearance looks much more difficult than it actually is - better get on with mine! Looking forward to seeing how yours turns out...

Hi Amelia,

Love the look of the Baby Silk, it is a good thing we have Jill, how else am I supposed to know about yarns from my own native country... Is it from "Du store Alpakka"? I seem to recognise the logo...

It was lovely to meet you in London, hopefully it won't be too long until next time!!

Kristine J.

ps. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with muted colours :-)

I think getting the colours right in stripes is very difficult. You could do a very narrow swatch to see what appeals? Or, more quickly, wind the different colours around something like a ruler, doing different proportions and in different orders. I think whatever you do with that pinky-red, it is going to stand out, unless you do a very narrow 2 row stripe? Have you got any Kaffe Fassett stripes to look at - he always seems to get them right. Often an odd number works better than an even one, don't ask me why!

Your Flighty looks lovely.It's a brave woman /strumpet [!] who'd wear the nipple revealing version ! ;-]
The Baby Alpaca/silk yarn looks lovely.I made myself fingerless gloves with their 100% alpaca.Pure luxury. Some sort of keyhole scarf or something you could tie around your neck would be divinely snuggly this winter.
Neat t-shirt too - bet it looks fab on you.
I think a nice dark spanish red would really suit you.Or a rich mulberry purple...

I'm with you on the colours 100%! I love natural, earthy neutrals and black too and I feel like I need to apologize for it because it doesn't make interesting blog-photography!

Flighty looks good lovely but after all the debating I bet you change the colours round! I wish it wasn't getting to the end of summer as I quite fancy doing something in 4ply cotton again.

Sarah

PS I too have proof of you in that t shirt!
